Children from Sowetho celebrate Christmas at Spur

Touching ACTS held a Christmas party for its beneficiaries on Sunday, 22 December at Savoy Spur Mthatha were children were awarded achievement awards and presents.

Sunday marked a special day in the lives of the 20 children whom Touching Acts cares for, the NPO cares for children that reside in what was previously a municipal landfill site, called eTipini, which has been relocated behind Mthatha Plaza. It is now called Sowetho but still remains inhumane as it at a municipal electricity substation.

With children between Grade R and Grade 9, both girls and boys, Touching Acts ran a Facebook campaign seeking good Samaritans to offer brand new clothes as Christmas presents to these children. “we were overwhelmed by the huge and immediate action by people that we reached via the Facebook post. So much that all 20 boys and girls each received Christmas clothes and party packs.” Said Sibongile Gqaleni-Mhlathi from Touching Acts.

What was most amazing was the donations by Mr Danzele and Miss Noble for an all-expenses paid party at Savoy Spur. The children enjoyed Spur burger with chips and their kiddie’s milkshake; the boys were more excited about having played the video games at the children play area, an experience beyond their imaginations.

After having achieved a 100% pass rate, Touching Acts awarded each child with an achievement award and awarded 4 top achievers, distinction pass, with top achiever’s awards. This helps motivate the children to, despite their surroundings, continue working hard towards their studies. Buffalo City Deaf and Blind Society made the award ceremony all possible by donating the 24 awards.

Founding member Zintle Noluyolo Mehlomakhulu said “On behalf of all the children and their mothers, I thank all the kind and giving individuals and organizations that supported this initiative.” She went to say “Christmas is universally celebrated as a family and showering of gifts. These underprivileged children will never forget this. We are thankful to you all”
